Netball World Cup ‘gees’ hits the Mother City for an African first

The netballing and sporting world’s attention is on Cape Town as the Mother City hosts Africa’s first ever Netball World Cup at the CTICC. Yesterday’s centre pass set in motion what promises to be an exciting tournament until 6 August 2023. 

Cape Town is currently in the grips of netball fever with exciting on court action and 'gees' in the streets.

 The opening ceremony – a celebration of Africa – provided the perfect welcome for all the participating teams and offered extra motivation for the rest of the 10-day tournament.  

 'On behalf of the City of Cape Town, we extend a warm welcome to all competing nations, the World Netball executives, and distinguished representatives from various countries across the globe. May they enjoy their stay and exploration of our beautiful city. We are proud to host Africa's first-ever Netball World Cup and we are determined to make South Africa and the entire continent proud.  In Cape Town, we pride ourselves in putting our best into everything that we do,' said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

 With many visitors and locals descending on the CTICC for the tournament and the Fan Park over the next two weeks, the City has also committed to efforts to safeguard the tournament. 

 'The City of Cape Town is not only a funding partner of this World Cup, but we form part of the integrated safety and security planning of this momentous tournament. We have deployed all of our Safety and Security personnel including Traffic Services, Metro Police, Law Enforcement, Disaster Risk Management, and Fire and Rescue to form part of the integrated safety plan with SAPS to ensure this event is safe and an enjoyable experience for all players, spectators and those working this tournament. We have traffic officials managing traffic flows where roads are closed in the CBD and other law enforcement agencies ensuring safety within the event foot print and outer perimeter,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith. 

FAN PARK

Day 1 has already produced some exciting on court action and the tournament has more in store for spectators.

 The City invites Capetonians and visitors who cannot get their hands on tickets to enjoy games on big screens at Cape Town's Netball World Cup Fan Park outside the CTICC.

 Entry to the Fan Park is FREE.

 Spectators can enjoy daily games on a big screen (indoor and outdoor), live entertainment, netball exhibition games, a kid's corner, and daily giveaways.

There's also a food court with outdoor seating, snacks, hot beverages and a beer garden.

 The City would also like to encourage residents to come out and enjoy the sport at a free Public Viewing Area (PVA) close to them.

 Each viewing area is equipped with seating, surround sound and live uninterrupted streaming of the games so there is no need to worry about load-shedding.

 Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase at affordable rates and local entertainment will take place at each location.

 The event promises to be an exciting day for family and friends.
